My name is Katie Getz. I have been a volunteer with the Advocacy Center since 2013 after coming to Sumter with my husband of 16 years. Although we had traveled around the world on many missions, after becoming a mom I became aware that my most important mission was at home.
I was overcome with joy after our two children came into my life (18 months apart). While our family was serving overseas and my husband was away, I had a pregnancy loss that nearly took my life. Enduring that while in a foreign country and so far from home without the support of family made me feel very lost and alone. It reminded me of the pivotal role a mother plays in a family.
I began to regularly go to bible studies with women who were champions of faith. And my deep love for Jesus Christ developed. Subsequently, following the miscarriage, my relationship with God transformed my perspective on motherhood.
I saw God at work within me in areas of parenting and in family dynamics that I felt unsure about. He worked in places where I felt insecure, unworthy, and out of touch. He pointed to stories in scripture that impressed upon my heart concepts of purpose and His plan instead of confusion and failure. Though I was overcome with grief I desperately wanted to be a present mom. So, I put more and more trust in Him, knowing he held my future. Scripture continues to transform me into being a better wife, mother, and lover of my family. I am a mom who raises my children with His help. I believe God can help others who need a little more assurance in parenting. Sharing His Word and His love is a highlight of my work.
My hope is that expecting mothers and caregivers who come into the center will be met with God’s love and grace through our team. And that, through that interaction, they might feel compelled to learn more about their Maker. At the Advocacy Center we advocate for moms, because they matter. I want to be a positive influence for other moms through all stages of motherhood and help them to see God’s purpose for them, trust Him more, and entrust their future generations to Him.
